India skipper Test Virat Kohli returned to the XI squad after missing the second Test match with back spasms. The 33-year-old is keen to get his first 100 per cent Test in more than two years, and with that ambition he opted to bat first on a cloudy day in Cape Town. India lost several quick wickets after KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal denied fresh ball threats.

Kohli has been accused of excessively chasing outside shots for his own benefit, and in this inning, he seemed determined to fish on the outside less easily. He was very careful to deny shots in the first fifteen innings, making some really good leaves on the outside. Just when the worries started to creep in, he broke the shackles with a terrific, iconic shot.

He pitched slightly towards the fifth stump that Marco Jansen threw from above the wicket (left arm), and he did a good job of calculating the risk involved in driving his overshoot. The end result is a picturesque screen-to-screen that seeps out of the class from the moment it leaves the bat, with no batsmen and bowlers moving as it runs to the boundary.

India are chasing a historic Test series victory in South Africa, which is currently level. After a major victory at Centurion, the hosts fought back at Rangers with Dean Elgar leading the charge from the front. A tight game at Newlands was set up, with Kohli and Pujara ensuring the visitors lost just two wickets in the opening tie on Day 1.
