Vaughan says England needs to manage Anderson’s transition

Former England captain Michael Vaughan said on Monday that James Anderson is not a strong team, but the England team needs to surpass the 39-year-old to develop into a red ball team.

Anderson is the most prolific fast bowler in test cricket. His name has 640 wickets, but Vaughan said it’s time for England to start eliminating him.

“Managing Jimmy’s retirement will be the key to this team’s progress,” Vaughan wrote in the “Daily Telegraph” column. “His future is the big elephant in the room.

“It’s not about firing Jimmy. It’s about what is right for English cricket. The right thing is transition, but it must be done respectfully.

“You can only do this by having a heated conversation with Jimmy about what is going to happen.”

Vaughan believes that England needs to start planning for the future.

“England cannot move on and become a world power at the helm of Anderson,” Vaughan said.

“I like watching the Jimmy Bowl. He is a poet with a ball in his hand. He can still be the best bowler in England for another two years.

“(Former Australian bowling superstars) Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath are retired and they have one or two years of high-level cricket left. Just because you can still perform doesn’t mean you should keep going.”

Anderson has scored eight wickets in the current Ashes Series, and Australia leads 3-0 after four tests.
