Starry, Inc. (the “Company” or “Starry”), the next-generation fixed wireless broadband provider, today announced that Rene Villegas has joined the company as its chief marketing officer. Villegas joined Starry from Amazon, where he served as the head of marketing and sales and helped create and lead the marketing, business development, and operations teams for “subscribe to Amazon”. As an experienced marketing executive, Villegas has held several marketing leadership positions, including American Express, True Car, Viggle and EF Education First. Villegas joined Starry in anticipation of rapid growth and the company was preparing to become a public company; on October 7, 2021, Starry announced that it would pass a partnership with FirstMark Horizon Acquisition Corp. (“FirstMark”) (NYSE code:FMAC).
“We are very happy to welcome Rene to the Starry team because we have taken an important step towards becoming a public company,” Said Chet Kanojia, co-founder and CEO of Starry. “His track record of helping successfully direct high-growth businesses, coupled with his extensive experience in performance marketing, brand management, and business development, makes him an ideal candidate to lead Starry’s marketing efforts as we expand #HappyInterneting and bring more Community state.”
“Rene joined Starry during a period of rapid development. We are very happy that he can use his experience and expertise to drive the company’s performance branding and marketing.” Said Alex Moulle-Berteaux, co-founder and chief operating officer of Starry. “At Starry, we are very concerned about customer satisfaction and build a highly disruptive unit economy to drive the success of our business. With Rene, we can continue to please customers and build meaningful relationships with them, and bring them Much-needed competition and selection of communities across the country.”
“Starry is disrupting the broadband industry with innovative technology and industry-leading customer obsessions. Our customer satisfaction score is orders of magnitude higher than any of our competitors.” Villegas said. “I am very happy to join a company that believes in customer first, and I look forward to providing excellent service not only for our subscribers, but also for the network of owners, management companies and housing partners we work with.”
In Starry, in addition to leading the company’s creative and branding efforts as a senior member of the management team, Villegas will also lead the company’s growth and field marketing teams in all markets.
During Amazon, Villegas helped launch Subscribe with Amazon, a new business unit that allowed Amazon subscription companies to list their products on Amazon for the first time and let Amazon customers discover their products. Villegas was originally built for digital subscriptions, helping the business shift to include physical subscription boxes, and achieving triple-digit growth in product selection, customer subscriptions, and revenue. Previously, he served as the head of marketing and business development at Viggle. His team promoted 5 million app installations in 12 months because Villegas helped guide the company’s IPO on Nasdaq.
Villegas graduated from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and holds an MBA from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.
