Midfielder Lindsey Holland was named the American Football Federation’s Female Player of the Year for the first time.
The 27-year-old player led the United States with 1,707 minutes in 22 games in 2021, tied for fourth with 6 goals and tied for second with 5 assists. She has played both defensive midfielders and offensive midfielders.
Holland scored two goals in 14 games with the Portland Thorns in the National Women’s Football League this year. She won the American Young Female Player of the Year in 2013 and became the third person to win both awards after Tobin Heath and Julie Eltz.

Holland won 36% of votes in the national team coaches announced on Thursday, players who have participated in at least one international game in 2021, board and athlete committee members, NWSL head coach, media, administrative staff and college coaches. Fans vote for the first time, and their voting weight is 15%.
Forward Carly Lloyd, who won the championship in 2008 and 2015, ranked second with 29% field goal percentage, and midfielder Rose Laville ranked third with 19% field goal percentage.
The 19-year-old forward Trinity Rodman was selected as the Young Female Player of the Year after winning the Rookie of the Year in the National Women’s Football League in the spirit of Washington. Rodman, the daughter of retired NBA great player Dennis Rodman, won 48%, followed by midfielder Catarina Macario with 32% and guard Emily Fox with 13%.
