The Uruguay Football Association said on Tuesday that former Inter Milan and Monterrey coach Diego Alonso has been appointed as Uruguay’s new coach.
The 46-year-old replaces Oscar Tabarez, who was fired last month after 15 years of work.
Tabarez’s departure was after a series of bad results, which made the two-time World Cup champion ranked seventh in the South American 2022 Qatar qualifier group.

The top four will automatically advance to the finals, and the fifth will enter the inter-regional playoffs.
Alonso has extensive experience at the club level, having coached Penarol and Bellavista in his hometown of Uruguay and Paraguayan teams Olympia and Guarani.
His longest coaching time was with the Mexican team Pachuca, where he led the Mexican team to the championship in 2016. He also won the North American and Caribbean Champions League with Pachuca and Monterrey.

The Uruguay Football Association did not provide details of his contract, but local media said that Alonso signed an agreement at least before the end of the South American qualifiers.
Uruguay is only one point behind the top four, and its four final qualifying matches are against Venezuela and Peru at home, and Paraguay and Chile at away.
