What to buy at the dollar store for the holidays to save money

Would you go to a dollar store during the holidays to save money?

This may sound tacky, but if you miss the dollar store deal, you will miss some great deals. This is especially true this year, because after the pandemic holiday closed last year, you may be partying with more people. More people, more gifts, more food to prepare and serve, all this means more money.

One dollar stores such as Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, and Dollar General may not be able to provide all the gifts on your shopping list, but they are an important source of extra items such as cleaning supplies and cooking utensils that you can easily forget when budgeting holidays.

And you may also find some pretty good stocking fillers for adults and children on your gift list, and update your holiday decorations at the same time.

If you donate to the shelter or otherwise help the chapel or non-profit organization to provide gifts for holiday events, the dollar store is also a good place to store gifts.

Oh, about that dollar thing. In November 2021, Dollar Tree announced that it will increase the price of most commodities to $1.25 in the first quarter of 2022. Dollar Tree stated that an extra quarter will allow them to bring back some customer favorites that are not available for $1. Currently, Dollar General and Family Dollar are stable at $1.

What to buy at the dollar store to save money for the holidays

You can buy a lot of things at the dollar store to spend more on your holiday, including decorations, gifts, gift wraps, cards, and even baking trays.

1. Holiday decorations

The dollar store is a great place to find DIY holiday decorations, the cost of which is even a fraction of the cost you find at discount giant Wal-Mart. Look for ribbons, bows, candles, and candlesticks for only $1.

If you want to decorate a side table during the holidays, please search for snow globes, miniature trees, holiday figurines, decorative baskets and desktop signs in your local dollar store to remind everyone to be happy.

If you want to decorate your desk (home or office) or the entrance desk at the front door, you can even get a desktop tree. The dollar store also sells a variety of decorations and tinsel to decorate your desktop (or full-size) tree without breaking the bank.

Finally, you can decorate the exterior of your house or apartment with dollar store wreaths and wreath hangers. If you like DIY, you can even use a dollar store garland as a base and make it more fancy by adding ribbons, bells or wires.

2. Gifts for children

For many children, the excitement of opening a gift is better than anything wrapped in it. You can buy all kinds of children’s toys, books and crafts at dollar stores, and the prices are much cheaper than paying in large stores or online. This year, buy a bunch of small gifts at the dollar store so that your child has a lot of gifts to take apart.

A cheap whoopee mat can provide hours of laughter (although you may confiscate it after four consecutive hours of puffing). If your child likes bubble toys, you can stock up on some different toys to help them keep busy during the school holidays.

You can even buy dolls, soft toys, racing cars, and action figures at the local dollar store.

The quality will definitely be different from the more expensive version, but when opening the cute unicorn they have been asking for all year long, which kid will notice?

3. Adult gifts

When you make a gift list this holiday season, you might not think that the dollar store is a must-go place to prepare gifts for the adults on the list. But don’t log them out completely. The Dollar store actually provides a lot of choices for your friends and family.

If you are buying for the crafty, you will have many options. Dollar Tree, Dollar General and Family Dollar all have a variety of art and craft supplies, including yarn, paint, beads and craft kits.

Even if your loved one does not like handicrafts, there are still many dollar stores to choose from. For the writers in your life, please stock up pens and notebooks. Or pick up a pack of socks as an emergency gift for anyone you forget.

Dollar store also sells a selection of puzzle books, which you can give to people who like challenges in life, or paperback books for readers.

If all other methods fail, pick up some assorted candies and make a sweet gift basket to brighten someone’s day this holiday season.

4. Gift packaging and bags

The exquisitely packaged and exquisite gifts constitute a beautiful landscape under the tree. However, this expensive packaging can be torn and thrown away within minutes, making it a costly waste.

Rather than splurge on expensive paper, it is better to buy cheaper alternatives at the dollar store. Reuse the gift bag or ask the children to color the picture or write a personalized message on the wrapping paper.

6. Cleaning Supplies

Increased visitors and a lot of cooking means additional cleaning before, during and after the holidays. But this is not necessarily an additional cost.

Buy disposable cleaning supplies at the dollar store to prepare for this task.

You may need to use a bit more, because some cheaper cleaners are more diluted than brand-name cleaners. But they are as effective as more elbow grease and can be an affordable solution during this busy and expensive period of the year.

7. Disposable bakeware

Only cook so much a year? If you don’t have enough space to store the various bakeware needed to prepare holiday meals, please spend one dollar on disposable items. Warning, if you are roasting a turkey, you may need to double the aluminum grill pan to make sure it is strong enough to hold the bird.

After dinner, crumpling that huge bakeware into a trash can is really a way to relieve stress! No need to worry about how to clean it, where to store it—or how you can afford it in the first place.
