Yorkshire has confirmed the temporary appointment of Darren Gough as the county’s new cricket general manager.
Yorkshire said the former England pacemaker will initially hold the position before the end of the 2022 season. His appointment comes at a time of great upheaval in the county.
Their handling of Azeem Rafiq’s allegations of racism and harassment was widely criticized and led to the resignation of Chairman Roger Hutton and CEO Mark Arthur.
On Friday, 16 members of the coaching staff and medical staff were fired, including first-team coach Andrew Gale and cricket director Martyn Moxon.
Goff had two matches with the White Roses and was the captain in his second game.
Gough said: “The Yorkshire Cricket Club has been a part of my life since I first participated in a cricket match in 1989. I have spent 15 happy years at the club. Like many people, I have been sad and angry. Pay close attention to how the club handles recent allegations of racism.
“I want to play my part in rebuilding cricket in Yorkshire and I look forward to working with the talented team of players here.
“I also realize that I have a broader responsibility to listen to everyone’s voice and make sure that everyone involved in the club feels welcome, instilling the values we want to associate with White Rose: honesty, bluntness, hard work, integrity and excellence.”
Gough had great success in Yorkshire and was a member of the team that won the county championship in 2001.
After playing for Essex County for a while, he returned to Yorkshire as captain in the 2007 and 2008 seasons before retiring.
He played 58 tests for the England team and is the 12th highest test wicket in the history of the national team, with 229 wickets.
He scored another 234 wickets in a day’s cricket match, becoming the first Englishman to exceed the 200 mark in a restricted match format.

Yorkshire batsman and England captain Joe Root has approved Gough’s appointment.
Before the news was confirmed, Root said in a speech in Australia: “He is a good man and I believe he will leave his mark on the club’s affairs.
“Based on my experience of spending time with Goughie, he is clearly passionate about the game and very knowledgeable. His love for it is obvious to all.
“I’m sure if he is the successor, he will want to put all of this, all his experience and achievements in the game first, and pass them on to the team.”
Gough has not participated in the competition since he retired in 2008, but he served as a short-term coaching role for the English Seamen on a New Zealand tour two years ago and was enthusiastic about the experience.
Yorkshire said that although his media responsibilities have now ended, he has also served as the host of talkSPORT.
Crucially, he was also highly praised by Rafik, and when his allegations of discrimination at the club were made public, he was the first person to contact.
It is understood that the move of Essex’s highly acclaimed head coach Anthony McGrath (former Yorkshire captain) will become an important item on Gough’s agenda.
