Port-au-Prince, Haiti, December 5, 2021 (Global News Agency)-Pre-trial detainees and prisoners in 20 overcrowded Haitian prisons across the country will steadily receive life-saving food through a joint operation in the next three months support. Despite the great efforts of the international community, the proportion of pre-trial detainees in Haitian prisons has continued to grow, reaching 82% of the total prison population.
This situation has led to extreme overcrowding in most prisons, and detainees have limited access to the outdoors and health services. Due to irregular and insufficient supplies, approximately 11,000 prisoners and detainees have extremely limited access to food, water and medical services throughout the prison, usually less than one meal a day.
Malnutrition makes people more susceptible to infectious diseases, and once they are infected, they are more likely to have adverse consequences. Malnutrition can also exacerbate chronic diseases. According to HtW Chairman Dr. John May, in order to meet all these needs, the Haitian Prison Service needs more capacity.
In response to this crisis, the “Anti-Hunger” organization has pledged to provide 12 containers of food from all over the United States for the three-month population. The World Hope International will manage the logistics of delivering and importing food to Haiti, and the Health Through the Wall and AIDS Healthcare Foundation will distribute supplies to 20 prisons on the mainland.
