The Chinese Football Association announced on Friday that Li Tie has resigned as the head coach of the Chinese Men’s Football Team and will be replaced by former teammate Li Xiaopeng.
The former Everton midfielder withdrew due to increasing criticism of his team’s performance in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, as the country reached the final for the first time since its debut nearly 20 years ago.
The Chinese team ranks fifth among the six teams in Group B, and only the top two have a place in Qatar.
The Football Association said in a statement: “Li Tie submitted to the Chinese Football Association a request to resign from the head coach of the Chinese National Men’s Football Team.”
“After discussion, the Chinese Football Association decided to approve his resignation application.
“After extensive negotiations, the Chinese Football Association decided to hire Li Xiaopeng as the head coach of China’s national men’s football team.”

After Lippi resigned in November 2019, Li Tie was appointed as the head coach and renewed his contract with the Football Association in August until 2026.
The 44-year-old player served as an assistant coach for Lippi during the time when the Italian Guangzhou Evergrande and the Chinese national team played, and then coached the Chinese Super League teams Hebei China Fortune and Wuhan Zall.
He was officially appointed as the head coach in January 2020 and led the Chinese team to the final round of the Asian preliminaries.
However, it won only one victory in six group matches-against Vietnam in October-and it drew with Oman and Australia.
Despite his outstanding performance, Li Tie was severely criticized for replacing the naturalized Brazilian winger Aloisio (known as Luo Guofu in China) after meeting with Oman in November.
Despite the disappointing results of the team, he was still under fire for using his personal social media account to promote the product.
Li Xiaopeng took over as head coach after making a deep impression in Shandong Luneng’s two-year tenure which ended last year due to health problems.
As Li Tie’s midfield partner during the 2002 World Cup finals, Li Xiaopeng recently cooperated with the Chinese Super League team Wuhan Football Club.
His first game will be held on January 27, when China will face Japan in five days, and then against Vietnam.
