Andy Murray knows exactly how painful a double error on the tennis court is, and this week the Scottish star found them just as painful off the court. Before BNP Paribas’s first game, a thief took Murray’s tennis shoes, and the couple brought some extra items: Murray’s wedding ring.
In an Instagram post on Thursday, Murray detailed how he lost his shoes and ring, and then asked for help in finding them. Murray-who married King Sears in 2015-said he left his shoes outside for ventilation because they became “damp, sweaty and smelly” during an exercise earlier in the day. His wedding ring is tied to his shoelace because he can’t play with it.
Because Murray’s hotel room in California does not have a balcony, he decided to leave his shoes under the car overnight. They left in the morning. When Murray came back for training with a new set of shoes he bought from a local specialty store, someone asked him where his wedding ring was-this put Murray’s “oh no” feeling in trouble.
“Yes, I know I’m an idiot. In hindsight, this seems like a terrible idea,” the 34-year-old Murray wrote on Instagram. “But I need some help.”
He added in the video: “Needless to say, I read poorly at home, so I want to try to find it.”
The 121st-ranked player Murray will face the 51st-ranked Adrian Mannarino in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. So far, his experience in Southern California has been bumpy, so Murray hopes to get better by then.
