A new study conducted by Harvard University’s TH Chan School of Public Health was published in the “Environmental Research Letters” on September 9. The study has been conducted for more than a year and studied the link between short-term exposure to fine particles and a sharp decline in cognitive function.
The study involved 300 office employees in 6 different countries, aged between 18-65. Participants in the study worked at least 3 days a week in the office, where they were assigned a workstation equipped with environmental sensors to collect real-time data on PM2.5 and CO2. Each participant must also install a custom-designed application on their mobile phone to test cognitive abilities.
The data collected during the study indicated that higher concentrations of PM2.5 and lower ventilation rates are closely related to slower response times and reduced accuracy of cognitive tests. The research team has observed that in indoor environments at concentrations of PM2.5 and CO2 that are considered normal, cognitive function is impaired. This study finally proved that indoor pollution not only affects health, but also reduces worker productivity.
What is PM2.5?
Particulate matter or PM refers to any solid particles light enough to be suspended in the air. Particles are classified according to their diameter (in micrometers), namely PM10, PM2.5, and PM1. PM2.5 is one of the most common types of particulate matter around us. It has a diameter of less than 2.5 microns and can cause serious long-term health damage after inhalation.
There are many sources of PM2.5, such as automobile exhaust, wildfire smoke and so on. Some respiratory droplets that spread Covid 19 are also classified as PM2.5 because their diameter is less than 2.5 microns. PM2.5 can cause cognitive decline, asthma, COPD and other respiratory diseases.

Some studies have shown that indoor air may be 50 times more polluted than outdoor air, which is usually due to lack of proper ventilation. Indoor pollution in office buildings and residential buildings may come from multiple sources, such as outdoor pollution sources, cleaning chemicals, air fresheners, furniture and furnishings.
