Every role in any Mike Flanagan project is so many layers and nuances, it’s definitely Midnight mass. What made you want to play this role in this story?
Kate Seal: What I like about Irene is that she is your unwilling hero at the beginning of the story. You think it’s about two people confronting each other on different aspects of the religious spectrum-an atheist and a priest. By the end of the show, you already have an unexpected combination of heroes. I have played many very sharp and strong women, and I like them. I love them unreservedly. But the challenge for Irene is to give up the idea that I must be sharp, ironic, and witty to be considered strong. You can be weak and strong at the same time, I just like Irene.

There is power in fragility. Irene fully embodies this. Father Paul came to Crockett Island and he looked great. What was Irene’s initial view of Father Paul?
Kate Seal: I think Irene was fascinated by him. His preaching hit her core. She agreed with his interpretation of the Bible. She likes the way he personalizes the island, and it feels a bit like he is talking to her directly. I think she was inspired by him at first.

When we started this story, how did Irene feel about her faith?
Kate Seal: Irene mentioned that her mother believed in religion, but she never went to church herself. She called herself a heretic. “I’m an ungodly pagan,” she declared. Irene didn’t come to church until she returned to the island after leaving for a while, so she had been there for a few months. I think Irene’s faith is sprouting, and a new understanding of God and religion is bringing her comfort. The Irene we met was always a moderate Catholic, who believed in religion. I think throughout the show, Irene never rejected what she believed to be God and what she believed to be faith.

I have to say, I didn’t join the church when I was 13 years old, and my grandmother called me a heretic…
Kate Seal: You can imagine Irene’s mother saying this to her. I like the fact that she began to believe in her later life because of the decisions you made, the friends you made, and you were in your 30s and 40s. The choices you make at the time, these are all wise decisions you made from an adult’s place. I think that after Erin has experienced everything from childhood and young adulthood, she found comfort and safety in the church, which is wonderful.

I only know who I am when I get older. I think it takes that kind of time to develop in order to fully understand your personal beliefs.
Kate Seal: I think it takes courage. I have a lot of prejudice against people who go to church every week. When I was preparing to play a role that went to church every week, I went to church. I have met more people who stay in touch with the type of faith that Irene has. They are still like me, politically left. They still have their own moral compass, but the community that faces the church brings the best of them. . I think that when we talk about fanaticism, when we talk about extremists and allow their understanding of God to justify their cruel behavior, these people are sometimes ignored. The other part of the religious community is kind people. They truly love their neighbors just as they love themselves.

During this journey Midnight mass, When it comes to beliefs, have you found that your views have changed or evolved?
Kate Seal: I want to answer this question as honestly as possible, because I believe faith is one of the most intimate facts about a person. What I want to say is that Irene prefers a structure to her beliefs, and I don’t like it. But Irene’s understanding of God and the understanding of higher power is something that really resonates with me. It was not until I performed Irene, until I had the opportunity to watch the performance, that I thought my personal beliefs were affected.
