Love is not always a feeling. Sometimes this is a deliberate choice…appear, lean inward, fight for it, and give up what we want for another person.
This man shows that kind of love for me every day. The fact that we were separated for more than a week during our isolation to protect Little D reminded me clearly.
No one else can imagine going through this crazy, wild, wonderful, sometimes exhausting, and often exhilarating life adventure with me. We are so different, but we compliment each other so well.
My tough personality desperately needs his prudent and thoughtful approach. He slowed down and made me hurry up.
Acknowledging our differences, celebrating them, laughing at them, and treating them as gifts makes our relationship so different. Yes, there are many times when we drive each other crazy, have misunderstandings, or hope that we can change each other. But in the final analysis, we know deep down in our hearts that if we are more similar, our relationship will never be like this.
Our different gifts make one stronger. I only hope that it took me at least 7 to 8 years after I got married to begin to accept and appreciate this fact. (We have been married for 18 years, and I can say with certainty that so far, the best years have begun in the past 10 years!)
So if I can give young couples one piece of advice: stop trying to change your spouse and start celebrating the gifts they have become.
