Sri Lanka took full advantage of India’s weak team’s play, winning Colombo’s second T20I with 4 wickets, tying three games 1-1. After Krunal Pandya tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, India was forced to play a brand new XI. The visitors handed their debut to four players-Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devdutt Padikkal, Nitish Rana and Chetan Sakariya. India has only five batsmen and all other batsmen are isolated.
Sri Lanka sent India to the strike zone after winning the toss and limited them to 132 to 5 on a difficult surface. Shikhar Dhawan scored the highest score with 40 points on 42 shots, while Devdutt Padikkal shot 29 points on 23 shots and Ruturaj Gaikwad shot 21 points on 18 shots.For the Lankan, Akila Dananjaya shot 2 points on 29, while Dushmantha Chameera, Wanindu Hasaranga and Dasun Shanaka each got a wicket
India struggled hard in the chase, but did not run enough on the chessboard. Dhananjaya de Silva led Sri Lanka home with 34 points and 40 unbeaten, while Minod Bhanuka contributed 36 points and 31 points at the start of the game. Chamika Karunaratne shot Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 6 strokes in the penultimate game to ease Sri Lanka’s victory. Left arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav is India’s best bowler, shooting 2 of 30.
After the defeat, the Indian captain Shikhar Dhawan praised the team for fighting against all adversity. He said: “The water turned around and stopped for a while. We knew we were a batsman. We knew we had to build our game cleverly. We were 10-15 times short. That would make a difference. I am a boy. We are proud. Never say that the attitude of death is amazing. Salute the boys because they took it to the end.”
Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka added that they are confident to do a good job and hope to keep India at a low score. They did it. Shanaka said, “The strategy is to work hard in the first six games. Then I went into the middle, but I couldn’t do anything. But DDS and Hasaranga performed well in the midfield. Speaking of international cricket, different boys are performing. I should thank BCCI and SLC allows us to show our talents during these difficult times.”
