(Reuters)-On Wednesday morning, after a chemical spill killed two workers and injured 30 others, clean-up work is still in progress. Lyondell Basel Industries (NYSE:) Located in Laporte, Texas, the company said.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night when the facility’s acetylation unit released approximately 100,000 pounds (45,000 kg) of a mixture containing acetic acid. Liandel said in a statement that “Everything is OK” was announced on Wednesday morning and the air monitoring did not show operational levels.
The company said that 24 of the 30 people sent to the local hospital have been discharged. The two people who died in the incident were contractors.
The incident marked one of the worst chemical disasters in the United States since a series of explosions at the TPC Group plant in Port Neches, Texas, in November 2019. Although there were no deaths and only 3 people were injured, they were told to evacuate in a four-mile radius the day before the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States.
Lyondell said that investigations into the cause of the leak are ongoing, and local and federal agencies including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Chemical Safety Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency have all been notified.
