I commend U.S. Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ), Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and their colleagues and staff for taking action to resolve these important issues The failed “drug war” with our country.
Our current federal laws are hurting hard-working Americans every day. They are responsible for breaking up families and preventing other law-abiding citizens from maintaining stable employment and housing. Facts have proved that the enforcement of these laws disproportionately targets people of color. They also never achieved their established goals-not based on facts or science-but based on misunderstandings-now is the time for us as a nation to solve these problems in a comprehensive manner.
Giving states the power to tax, regulate, and enforce cannabis fairly, while setting clear standards is not only a wise public health policy, but also socially and economically meaningful for our country. The federal government’s legalization of marijuana will overturn severe civil and criminal penalties and threats of confiscation of assets to all Americans.
We fully support correcting past injuries, creating opportunities for the future, and eliminating federal nonviolent marijuana convictions, severe sentences, sentencing review hearings, encouraging states and localities to do so, and making it easier for small businesses to obtain loans. This will help elevate the worst-hit communities, while promoting innovation and job growth for all.
By opening up new possibilities for the research and development of cannabis and its compounds, we will greatly increase the potential to have a positive impact on millions of suffering patients, and ultimately provide the United States with an opportunity to gain strong scientific and R&D leadership.
