Sourav Ganguly, Chairman of the Cricket Control Council of India (BCCI), expressed sorrow on the death of India’s World Cup champion batsman Yashpal Sharma on Tuesday. The 66-year-old died of cardiac arrest in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Taking his official Twitter account, Ganguly wrote, “Sad to hear the news of Yeshe Bar Sharma…had the opportunity to work, he as captain, player, and then a very important 1983 victory on TV. Part of this, it shows that young players, like our dream trophy. RIP.”
Many people from the Indian Cricket Brotherhood, including Sachin Tendulkar, Shikhar Dhawan, Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman and Irfan Pathan, paid tribute to the late cricketer. Sharma’s teammates at the 1983 World Cup didn’t believe it. “It’s hard to accept,” former captain Sunil Gawaska told TOI
“It’s shocking and incredible. I just met him at an event celebrating our 83rd World Cup victory anniversary in Gurgaon. He seems to be the healthiest in this group. I thought he could live 100. Years! He is a strict vegetarian and never drinks or smokes. He told me that he only drank soup at dinner these days, and reduced the rice. He has a tee. Control his diet. He is a strong man. People who are basically fitness freaks,” former Indian captain Dilip Vinsaka told The Times of India.
Sharma conducted 37 tests and 42 ODIs for India, with 1,606 and 883 runs, respectively. In 1978, he represented India for the first time in the match between Sialkot and Pakistan.He also made his debut in the 1979 game against England at Lord Stadium.
Sharma was the second highest runner in the 1983 World Cup in India. He scored 89 points in the league game against the West Indies, which set the tone for the World Cup for India. Sharma also became India’s top scorer with 61 points in the semifinals against England, as Kapil Dev’s men entered the finals of major tournaments.
The former cricketer participated in his last international match in 1985, which was against England’s ODI in Chandigarh. According to media reports, Sharma fell at home after returning from a walk in the morning. His wife, two daughters and a son survived.
Sharma is keen to watch movies for 83 years. This is a Bollywood movie based on India’s first World Cup win, which was postponed due to the pandemic.
