FRANKFURT (Reuters)-A World Health Organization (WHO) committee said on Monday that human genome editing technologies for treating serious diseases should be shared more generously so that poorer countries can benefit from highly active scientific fields.

“WHO should work with others to encourage relevant patent holders to help ensure fair access to human genome editing interventions,” the 18-member committee said in a report.

The Gene Editing Expert Committee was established at the end of 2018 after a Chinese scientist stated that he edited the genes of twin babies, and was asked to make recommendations on the national and international governance mechanisms for human genome editing.

The report emphasizes the current position of WHO and strongly opposes the modification of the human genetic code that will be passed on to future generations, that is, genetic editing of the germline genome.

Robin Lovell Badge of the Francis Crick Institute in the United Kingdom said: “Same minds shouldn’t consider doing this because these technologies are not safe or effective enough, and we are not ready to consider all moral factors.” member.
