WASHINGTON (Reuters)-Police said on Sunday that more than six months after the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of then President Donald Trump on January 6, the remaining heights surrounding the white dome The safety fence has been removed.

On Friday, workers began to demolish the last 8-foot-tall (2.4-meter) black mesh fence, which once surrounded several blocks of Capitol Hill and interfered with the passage of pedestrians and vehicles.

According to a statement issued by the agency, the decision to dismantle the remaining fence is based on the current threat environment and the recent enhancement of the Capitol Police’s response capabilities.

“If needed, we are ready to quickly strengthen our security posture,” said Yugananda Pittman, acting chief of the US Congressional Police, in a statement.

More than 535 people were accused of participating in the violence on January 6, when Trump supporters rushed into the U.S. Capitol to try to prevent Congress from proving Democratic President Joe Biden’s election victory, but was unsuccessful.

Five people died on the day and the following day of the violence, including a congressional policeman. Two policemen who were involved in defending the Capitol later committed suicide. More than a hundred policemen were injured.
