The Het Parool newspaper reported on Tuesday that a man believed to be a Dutch crime reporter Peter R de Vries was shot and seriously injured in a street in Amsterdam, adding that he was taken to the hospital.
The police said in a statement that a man was shot dead in Amsterdam without confirming his identity.
“A man was just shot dead in Lange Leidesdwarsstrat,” the police statement said, referring to a street near one of the city’s largest public squares. “A number of emergency services have been summoned, and the police are looking for the suspect.”
They asked witnesses to call the police.
Parool quoted witnesses as saying that de Vries was shot in the head. The newspaper published a photo of the scene, several people gathered around a person lying on the ground.
De Vries is a Dutch celebrity known for his investigations after the kidnapping of beer giant Freddy Heineken in 1983. He became famous in the United States for investigating the disappearance of teenage Natalee Holloway in 2006.
De Vries has been threatened by the underworld in many cases in the past.
In 2013, Willem Holledeer, who kidnapped Heineken, was convicted of threatening De Vries. Holledeer is currently sentenced to life imprisonment for participating in five murders.
In 2019, Ridouan Taghi, currently on trial for murder and drug trafficking, took an unusual step by issuing a public statement denying reports that he had threatened to kill De Vries.
