WASHINGTON (Reuters)-On Thursday, search and rescue personnel tried to rescue a construction worker trapped in a partially constructed five-story building that collapsed in a heavy rain in Washington.
John Donnelly, assistant director of DC Fire and EMS, said that four other construction workers were removed from the rubble shortly after the building in the US capital collapsed at 3:30 pm (1930 GMT) Up.
The rescued workers were taken to the local hospital from the scene about 5 miles (8 kilometers) north of the Capitol. Donnelly said that they are not life-threatening.
Donnelly said that the trapped worker was conscious and kept in touch with the firefighters who tried to rescue him from the rubble, adding: “We are talking to him and I think this is a good thing.”
The image shows dozens of firefighters flocking to the piles of wood left after the collapse, using saws and heavy equipment to move large pieces of wood.
Last week, an apartment building in Surfside, Florida collapsed because most residents were sleeping. Searchers there have found 18 bodies and said that 145 people are still missing.
