MADRID (Reuters)-The newspaper Nation on Monday quoted an unidentified source close to the proceedings that an official autopsy of John McAfee’s body revealed that he committed suicide in a Spanish prison cell awaiting extradition to the United States.

The spokesperson of the Catalan court system responsible for the autopsy had no information about the report.

His lawyer Javier Villalba said last week that prison guards found software mogul McAfee’s body hanging in his cell on Wednesday, appearing to have committed suicide.

He said on Friday that McAfee’s widow Janice asked him to request a second independent autopsy after the first results were announced.

Janice McAfee once stated that she did not believe her husband was suicidal and blamed the US authorities for his death.

McAfee, who was born in the United Kingdom, launched the world’s first commercial anti-virus software in 1987 and was detained at Barcelona Airport in October last year. He lived for many years under the hunt of the US authorities, some of which time was on a mega yacht.

He was indicted on tax evasion charges in Tennessee, and was charged with participating in cryptocurrency fraud in New York.
