Four-time Olympic gold medalist Serena Williams will not participate in the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer. Williams confirmed that she will not participate in the game at the Wimbledon press conference on Sunday.
“I’m not actually on the Olympic roster-I don’t know. If so, then I shouldn’t be on the roster,” Williams told reporters.
Williams won three gold medals in women’s doubles, winning gold medals with her sister Venus Williams in 2000, 2008 and 2012. The two were defeated in the first round of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Serena Williams also won the women’s singles gold medal in 2012, beating Maria Sharapova in the final.
The 39-year-old American did not elaborate on her decision to skip the postponed Tokyo Olympics.
“I made the Olympic decision for many reasons. I don’t want to participate today. Maybe another day. I’m sorry,” Williams said.
The 2020 Olympic Games were postponed by the coronavirus pandemic for one year and were originally scheduled to open on July 23.
Williams will seek her eighth Wimbledon title in the next few weeks, and her first title since 2016. Williams has 23 women’s Grand Slam singles titles, and is the most champions in history second only to Margaret Court. Her last Grand Slam singles victory was at the 2017 Australian Open.
