Sajid Javid was appointed as the UK’s new health minister after Matt Hancock was forced to resign on Saturday for kissing his assistant in violation of coronavirus regulations.
“The Queen is pleased to approve the appointment of Rt Hon Sajid Javid as the Minister of State for Health and Social Care,” the government wrote in a brief press release issued on Saturday.
Former Minister of Finance and Minister of the Interior Javid said he was “honoured” by this appointment.
Hancock, who led the United Kingdom’s response to the pandemic, especially the introduction of vaccines across the country, resigned in a letter to Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
He wrote: “When we let them down by breaking the guidelines like I did, we should thank the people who made such great sacrifices in this pandemic.”
“The last thing I want is my private life to distract people from the single-minded attention that leads us out of this crisis.”
Johnson said he regretted receiving Hancock’s resignation and that he should be “very proud” of his service.
The government is accused of hypocrisy
Johnson faced criticism from various scandals, including funding the renovation of his Downing Street apartment. After Hancock admitted to violating COVID social distancing rules, he initially supported his health secretary, and he urged the public to insist on passing measures.
The opposition party accused the government of hypocrisy and violated the blockade regulations, and many members of the public were fined.
Hancock admitted that he disappointed the public after the Sun published a security camera image obtained from a whistleblower on Friday, which showed that he kissed his assistant in the office on May 6. .
The main opposition Labour Party stated that the government needs to answer questions about the secret appointment of Gina Coladangelo, an assistant and former lobbyist, to Hancock’s senior advisory team.
She and Hancock met for the first time in college, and they were married until they realized that the news of the scandal was about to be announced.
Last week, after Johnson’s former assistant Dominic Cummings (Dominic Cummings) released a private WhatsApp exchange, Hancock rejected criticism of his handling of the COVID pandemic, in which Johnson appeared to describe him as “hopeless of”.
The Johnson administration has overseen one of the highest official death tolls caused by the pandemic and has been criticized for its early handling of the error-characterized coronavirus pandemic under Hancock’s leadership.
Hancock also faced accusations that he lied to Johnson and awarded the contract to an unqualified friend.
He also faces further questions about his ownership of shares in a family company that received a COVID-related contract from his department last year.
But Johnson praised Hancock’s role in the successful launch of the vaccine in the UK, which he called “one of the greatest successes of the modern country.”
Government investigates leak of Hancock lens
At the same time, the British government said on Sunday that it would investigate how footage of former minister Hancock kissing and hugging his assistant entered the media and forced him to resign.
When asked whether the Ministry of Health is investigating how Hancock’s photos were taken and leaked in his government office, Northern Ireland Minister Brandon Lewis told Sky News: “I know the Ministry of Health will investigate this matter. Know exactly how that recording…out of the system.”
Hancock’s successor, Javid, has held the two highest positions in the government, serving as Minister of Finance from 2019 to 2020, and Minister of Interior in 2018.

Labour Party leader Kil Starmer said Hancock was right to resign, but said on Twitter that Johnson “should fire him.”
England was originally scheduled to fully relax restrictions on June 21, but the appearance of the Delta variant that was first discovered in India caused social distancing and other rules to be extended to July 19.
