Anderson Silva returned to the professional boxing ring with great success, as the UFC legend defeated former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in Guadalajara, Mexico with a split decision. This match is Silva’s first boxing ring competition since 2005.
The battle started slowly, and before Silva started playing some of the mental games that defined many of the best moments of his legendary UFC career, the two felt that each other was out. As Chavez had some success in early boxing skills, Silva began to use awkward timing and angles-and a natural physical advantage-to start combining clean boxing with ridicule, which seemed to make Chavez Si quit the game.
Silva continued to relax, getting rid of the jab and forcing Chavez back into the rope. Once Silva began to force Chavez to retreat, Chavez seemed to be fading, his work efficiency decreased, and he seemed tired. Silva kept stepping on the accelerator, and Chavez above his right eye bleeds and completely controls the battle.
At the end of the eight rounds, Silva seemed to have done enough to fight on the scorecard, but he did have to survive the last panic because a referee provided Chavez with 77- 75 scorecard. The other two referees scored the same, supported Silva and gave him a huge upset victory.
“I feel very happy,” Silva said after the game. “Wow. I need to say thank you because my coach worked with me a lot. When I started training, I told my coach I needed to do this because I like fighting. Boxing is my dream for many years and I need Prove my respect for boxing. I need to come here and do my best.”
Silva defeated Chavez 99 to 53 in the battle, and was able to absorb every punch from Chavez without being affected at all. After the game, Chavez claimed that he felt that the game should be a tie. He said that he did not punch enough, but Silva never hurt him in the game.
This battle may mark the next chapter of Silva’s career, as the 46-year-old hinted that he could quickly turn around and return to the ring.
“Now I’m going home, and my son will fight soon,” Silva said. “I will go back and help my son and my team. Maybe I will fight soon.”
