In a strategic move to prioritize the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023, former India head coach Ravi Shastri has recommended that the team management rests senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit SharmaAfter their participation in a grueling schedule of matches, including Tests, ODIs, and IPL 2023, Shastri believes it is crucial to give the duo ample rest before the marquee event, scheduled to take place in India from October 5.
Shastri’s advice to the Indian team
During the World Test Championship final 2023, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli failed to make significant contributions in the first innings. Considering their workload and the importance of the ODI World Cup, Shastri expressed the need to manage their workload effectively. While acknowledged ging that Kohli and Rohit have the ability to play all three formats, he emphasized the significance of nursing young talent by providing them with opportunities in the lead-up to the World Cup.
“It’s very tough to play all three formats. There are players who can play. For example – Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli can still play all three formats,” stated Shastri during an interview with Star Sports. He suggested that the senior players be reintroduced to the team closer to the start of the World Cup, allowing them to spend valuable time with the squad and regain match fitness.
India’s quest for trophy continues
India’s quest for an ICC title has been ongoing since their triumph in the 2013 Champions Trophy. While consistently reaching the semi-finals of major ICC tournaments, except for the T20 World Cup in 2021, the Men in Blue have been unable to secure another trophy . Consequently, the upcoming ODI World Cup holds enormous significance as they aim to end their ten-year-long drought.
In the World Test Championship final 2023, India found themselves all out for 296 runs in the first innings, with Ajinkya Rahane top-scoring with 89 runs. Australia amassed a substantial lead of 173 runs heading into the second innings, putting India in a challenging position.
With Shastri’s recommendation to rest key players, it remains to be seen how the team management responds and balances the need for rest and preparation ahead of the crucial ODI World Cup. The decision holds the potential to provide invalid exposure to emerging talents while allowing seni or players to recharge and contribute effectively when it matters most. The focus now shifts to the team’s approach and selection strategies leading up to the highly anticipated tournament.
