Delhi Capitals seem to be having a nightmare of a season this year. The finalists of 2020 are sitting at the bottom of the table with 5 defeats in 5 games. The David Warner-led unit has lacked coherence as a team, with a striking imbalance in the Playing XI that has been left exposed.
In all 5 games, Delhi Capitals have seemed far off from victory. The team has not even experienced any close encounters in the league so far. Some may argue that the game against Mumbai Indians was a close one, but if you look at the bigger picture, Delhi Capitals never stood a chance. They were never in the game to even begin with. After such constant humiliating defeats, fans are bound to ask the question,
“Where are Delhi Capitals lacking this season?”
Well, for starters, it would be very easy to point fingers at the batters of the team, who have failed to perform in these 5 games. Prithvi Shaw has not been able to find his mark, having scored just 34 runs in 5 innings, with two first-over ducks. This has put pressure on the middle order, which has also failed to deliver for the team in these tough times. The team is missing Rishabh Pant in the middle order and it is innately evident.
In the top 20 batters of the league this season, there’s only one player from Delhi Capitals and that is their stand-in skipper David Warner. Warner is the 5th highest run-getter this season, with 228 runs in 5 games. Even though he has been among the runs, his performances have still not been up to the mark. These 228 runs from David Warner have come at a strike rate of 117, which is too low for a batter of Warner’s caliber. Fans and Cricket Pundits alike have put David Warner as the root cause of most of Delhi’s problems.
Warner opens the innings with Prithvi Shaw. One gets out early while the other plays cautiously, almost to the extent of stat-padding. Now, this puts pressure on the middle order to score quick runs for the team, which quite frankly, they have not been able to. Let’s have a look at the players in Delhi’s middle order. It contains some talented players such as Mitchell Marsh, Yash Dhull, Manish Pandey, and Abhishek Porel. Of all these players, only Manish Pandey has looked good and scored some runs for the team.
When the batters perform so poorly, it ultimately puts the morale of the bowlers down as well. Delhi’s bowlers have lacked the edge this season, giving away easy runs to opposition batters while also not picking many wickets. In 5 games, Delhi’s bowlers have pick just 24 wickets, which is below 5 wickets per game. Batters have found it easy to put them away for runs. Thus, if Delhi wish to put their bad luck away and get back into the winning zone, they’ve got to start performing as a unit.
Warner has to stop being the ‘anchor’ as that is not his style. He has got to stop thinking about the responsibility for a while and let the runs flow from his bat. Batters need to be a little more responsible and start making runs. The bowling has been average, but as the batters start putting good runs, we can expect the bowlers to be back in form.
