The stage is set for the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League as 4 times champion Chennai Super Kings take on the last season’s winners Gujarat Giants at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Ahead of the season opener, CSK’s Ajinkya Rahane addressed the media and answered several questions.

Where will Ajinkya bat?

On Thursday, Ajinkya Rahane, the latest addition to the Chennai Super Kings squad, expressed his willingness to play in any position for the four-time champions in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. Despite traditionally playing as an opener in the T20 format, Rahane acknowledged that CSK already have a well-established opening pair in Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Rahane said to the media people present there, “I have always been an opener. I have always opened the batting in the T20 format, so not much of a difference in my role. Still, whatever the management and captain ask me to do, I am always open to doing it. For me, it’s always about the team, so whenever I get an opportunity I will give my best.” His statement reflects his understanding that the team’s success is paramount and that individual performances must be subordinated to the collective goal of winning matches

Will Ben Stokes bowl?

Ben Stokes had earlier spoken of problems with his left knee, post which it was reported that he would not be able to take the ball in the initial few games for the franchise. According to a recent report by the British media, Ajinkya Rahane was asked about the possibility of Ben Stokes bowling in the upcoming IPL season, or if he will only be playing as a specialist batter. Rahane gave an open-ended reply, indicating that he is not in a position to provide a definitive answer regarding Stokes’ role in the team.

“You will see that tomorrow how Mahi bhai uses him. It’s completely in Mahi bhai’s mind. He will use him really well.”, Rahane answered, meaning that the final decision is in the hands of Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
