The 16th annual study conducted by the Ponemon Institute highlights the rising threat of data breaches driving higher deployments of encryption
Security and IT professionals in the Middle East have demonstrated a growing desire to protect critical applications and data, adopting encryption at higher speeds for new use cases such as containers and IoT platforms, as well as email and private cloud infrastructure.This and other discoveries Entrust 2021 Middle East Encryption Trend Research, Ponemon Institute’s sixteenth annual cross-border survey. Threats and priorities identified

When talking about the factors that drive data encryption in the Middle East, the top priority is to protect customer personal information (59% of respondents to 54% globally) and intellectual property (57% to 49% globally). The fastest-growing drivers are limiting liability for violations or unintentional disclosures (up 47% from 39% last year) and compliance with external privacy or data security regulations and requirements (39%, an increase of 11% in the past two years).
Unfortunately, although encryption is the foundation of data protection, only one-third (29%) of the Middle Eastern companies surveyed stated that they have been using encryption plans/strategies-well below the global average of 50% this year. At the same time, most of these organizations (59%) reported that they had experienced a data breach, which is the second highest rate in the world and well above the global average of 44%.
The role of hardware security modules (HSM) is growing
In the entire Middle East region, more than two-thirds (68%) of surveyed organizations use hardware security modules (HSM), which is one of the organizations with the highest adoption rate of all surveyed regions. In addition, the highest use case for using HSM is application-level encryption (47%), and organizations in the Middle East use HSM more than any other region’s Internet of Things (IoT) root of trust (30% and 21% globally). In addition, the fastest-growing use cases are 21% of document signing (a 16% increase in the past three years) and a cloud access security broker (CASB) for encryption key management at 32% (a 9% increase over the same period).
