“Soil” is a series of biomorphic ceramic sculptures of different shapes based on growing fungi or organisms. Each of them contains a hole that has a similar appearance to a human mouth. “In the initial design, I made some very cute rabbit patterns in pink. However, by modifying the appearance of the artwork, I eliminated the pure cuteness in the original design and emphasized the conflict behind the cuteness,” Luna said. Compared to simple cuteness, Luna adds a little discomfort to “Rabbit” because she hopes that people will notice that there are some violent factors behind cuteness. This work is intended to expose a group of mysterious internet celebrities who are making mukbangers. This group of people can call themselves “Rabbit”-the “Rabbit” in Chinese pronunciation. This cute name actually has deep connotations, because “rabbit” also means “vomit”, which is the hidden meaning of its name. The act of vomiting and cleaning has become the secret of mukbangers. After turning off the camera, they hid behind and let the undigested food come out of their mouths. “The public still does not understand these dietary and health problems of mukbangers. The reason why I chose rabbit as the core element of “rabbit” is to raise people’s awareness of the situation of mukbangers and raise this social issue.” Luna said.
Like “Rabbit”, most of Luna’s works focus on discussing the true meaning of “cute”. She likes to show the contrast between cuteness and violence. The meaning behind the charming appearance can be seen as Luna’s mature artistic theme and her personal artistic style. “Personally, I prefer to get inspiration from my own life experience, and then to explore social issues in more depth. In the early days, my works paid more attention to visual presentation, which was relatively simple. Now, I pay more attention to the deep-visual presentation The level of expression behind…” Luna explained. “Cute” is not a positive word for her, because she thinks that “cute” is equivalent to weakness. In fact, people are more willing to protect those petite, easily injured, and weak things, which they call “cute”. And behind this word, there are also stereotypes and desire for control. This is the dark side behind cuteness. Most of the paintings and sculptures she created before are small and cute, but Luna wants to convey that there is a person who looks cute, but they do have some hidden personalities that most of us don’t know. Luna hopes that people will explore and redefine the deep meaning of “cute” through her works.
In addition, Luna is also the curator of the exhibition “Alice, wake up!” in New York. “Alice, Wake Up” is derived from the classic fairy tale “Alice in Wonderland”. At the end of the story, Alice’s self-awakening allowed her to escape from the fairyland and return to reality. Luna interviewed many artists at the time. When she was planning an exhibition, Luna wanted to express her self-awakening in the exhibition, so she used “Alice, wake up” as the best description of the theme. “I hope that the audience can discover a space beyond reality, and then bring some feelings back to reality through the exhibition. I am happy to help people realize the power of self-awakening. I will continue to work hard” Luna told us.
